This recipe serves as a base; you can spice up your guacamole with a number of different spices or other ingredients. We give you a few ideas here to get you started.

Guacamole Dip Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lime or lemon juice
  • Optional garnishes: red onion, minced serrano chilies (stems and seeds removed), cilantro leaves, chopped tomato, minced garlic

1. Cut avocados in half lengthwise, to expose the seed. Use a spoon to scoop out the seed. Using a small knife, cut sections into the avocado flesh. Be sure not to cut through the peel. Then use the same spoon to scoop the fruit out of its skin. Place scooped out pieces into a mixing bowl.

2. Use a fork to mash the guacamole. It should have a spreadable consistency, but will still have lumps in it. At this time, mix in the salt and lemon juice.

3. Experiment with different items to give your guacamole an interesting flavor twist. The serrano chilies make a spicy dip while cilantro gives it a distinct Mexican flavor. Most extra ingredients can be added at the same time as the lemon juice; however, if you choose to add chopped tomatoes to your guacamole wait to add them until just before serving.

4. Cover guacamole and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Enjoy!

Three Tips for Making Good Guacamole Dip

1. The quality of the guacamole you prepare depends primarily on the avocados, the key ingredient in the dish. Be sure to pick out avocados that are ripe. Determine the ripeness of the avocado by pressing gently on the skin. Ripe avocados should have a little give, but still feel firm; if they are too hard or too squishy they are either over or under ripe.

2. Taste as you go. Perfect guacamole is made through experimenting to find the perfect combination of ingredients. Don’t be afraid to try new things, but always gauge what your dip tastes like before serving it!

3. Make sure you seal your guacamole tightly while storing it. Oxygen is what discolors the dip, and although the brown color doesn’t affect the flavor, green guacamole is infinitely more appetizing and fresh looking.
