Guacamole Dip With Cumin

Guacamole dip originated in Mexico, where avocados are common. It spread, however, to many other countries, in particular the Southwest United States. It is usually served as an appetizer with tortilla chips, which are bland and allow the eater to concentrate fully on the flavor of the dip. To make guacamole, the basic formula is always the same – mash the avocados, then add juices and seasonings to taste. Since homemade guacamole is now a staple of parties, there are many different variations by home, as there are many ways to season the dip to add unique, personal touches. In this case we will make guacamole dip with cumin. It has also become a staple because it is so easy to make. In addition, it is safe to serve to any friends, as it is completely vegetarian, and usually vegan.

Guacamole with cumin ingredients

  • 5 large avocados
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 large clove garlic, minced
  • 1 jalepeno, minced
  • salt

Cumin seeds for cumin guacamole recipe

(You also need a mortar and pestle, for grinding and mashing.)

First, ready the cumin seeds. Using a small skillet, toss the cumin seeds over moderate heat for about 30 seconds. You should begin to smell the fragrance of the seeds. Let the cumin cool completely in the mortar, then use the pestle to grind the cumin seeds into a fine mixture.

Cut the avocados in half and take out the pits. Then, scoop about half of them into a bowl and mash with a fork. Do not go for a thin paste, but a more chunky mixture. Add the lemon juice, cilantro, cumin, garlic, and jalepeno. Stir in the remaining avocados, distributing the ingredients evenly among the mixture. Add salt to taste, and either serve at room temperature, or allow to chill.

Guacamole With Cumin Extra Tips

Although any food is better when made with fresh ingredients, sometimes you just don’t have time to prepare them. So if you don’t have time to squeeze fresh lemon juice, toast cumin seeds, or mince garlic, use pre-cut products. Use the same amount of lemon juice and cumin seeds, and one clove of garlic is about one teaspoon of the pre-minced canned products. A canned or jarred ingredient may not have quite the same flavor, but it will do in a pinch.

Also, make sure the avocados are ripe. A ripe avocado is not too hard, but not too mushy. A good rule of thumb is to purchase avocados with the same firm texture as your nose, which is between soft and hard.
