The Best Homemade Guacamole Recipe
Guacamole is an avocado-based dip that is often served with Mexican food. It is popular as a topping for tacos, nachos, and taco salads. This particular recipe for homemade guacamole is simple to make, using ingredients that are readily available in most grocery stores. Traditional recipes call for basic ingredients such as avocados, jalapenos, and tomatoes, and this recipe expands on that with the addition of cilantro and fresh squeezed lime juice. If you are searching for a recipe on how to make guacamole, this is great recipe to have on hand to whip up quickly when you are craving tortilla chips and salsa, or when you are searching for appetizers to have for an impromptu get-together with friends.
Here’s what you will need for this particular homemade guacamole recipe:
3 ripe avocados
1 teaspoon salt
2 plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped
the juice from one lime
1/2 cup minced onion
2 Tablespoons minced fresh cilantro
pinch of cayenne pepper
Directions
1. Mash the avocados. To do this, first insert a knife in the avocado lengthwise. When your knife reaches the seed, turn the avocado all the way around until the avocado is cut all the way through. Twist the halves of the avocado and pull apart. Remove the pit by spearing it with the knife and lifting the pit up, away from the avocado. Discard the pit, and scoop out the avocado insides with a spoon and place in a bowl.
2. Lightly mash the avocados in the bowl with a fork. Be careful not to over mash them, otherwise you will end up with a soupy mess, which is not the intended result.
3. Add the remaining ingredients to the bowl and stir together.
4. Cover the guacamole dip and refrigerate for at least an hour. This gives the ingredients time to blend together.
Although this recipe is simple, there are some things you can do to ensure that you will serve the best guacamole. First, make sure your avocados are ripe. If your store doesn’t have the best selection, you can buy the avocadoes, and then let them sit on the counter for a day or so. This will speed up the ripening process so they will work great for this recipe. If your store doesn’t have plum tomatoes, use any type. Even canned tomatoes will work in a pinch-just make sure you drain them well.
Feel free to customize this dip. Cooking is about experimenting, so use this recipe as a starting point for great guacamole. Like garlic? Add some minced garlic. Like spicy food? Maybe try adding a minced jalapeno to the dip. However you prepare this dip, this guacamole recipe is great to add to your recipe file.
